Antietem Battlefield
The Battle of Antietem was a Civil War battle fought on September 17, 1862. It is also known locally and by many in the south as the battle of Sharpsburg because it was fought in corn fields just outside of Sharpsburg, Maryland. Sharpsburg is located just across the border from West Virginia.
The battlefield covers an extensive area that is rich with monuments and signposts that help you visualize the battle. You can tour the site by bus or by car. The driving tour will take you about a half-day to complete if you stop to see each monument. If you take the tours, plan a full day as there are many places to visit.
