Lookouts kept watch over the Deleware River valley from Bowman's TowerThis tower is built on the site of a lookout that was manned during the American Revolution. This tower stands atop a hill that was owned at the time by the Jonathan Pidcock (1729 - 1812) family. Their remains are marked by a monument located just off the road leading to the tower. It is over 100' tall, and contains a very narrow staircase and an elevator that takes visitors to an observation deck at the top of the tower. From the top you can see the Delaware River, the Thompson Neely House, as well as fantastic views of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. You can access the tower by following the signs from River Road, however, it is only open when staffed by volunteers and this is done on an infrequent basis and only during the summer months. To access the site any other time, you purchase a one-day pass to the wildflower preserve across from the Thompson Neely house and follow their trails to the tower. I recommend that if you can't hike very steep terrain that you wait to visit until the tower drive is open. If you enjoy this type of hike, the walk through the preserve and up to the tower is worth the effort. |
