Bunker Hill, where it all started...Less than two months after the battles of Lexington and Concord, the Continental forces encountered there bloodiest battle of the war. Entrenched in redoubts on Breed's Hill in Charlestown, the Continental army held off two attacks by the British before succumbing on the third assault. Bunker Hill got its name because of the bunkers, known as redoubts, that were hastily put up by the American army. At that time the hill overlooked the harbor area. Today, buildings all but obscure the view. |
