The Cross MansionThis home located just West of the New Jersey Brigade area in Jockey Hollow was built by John A. Bensel in 1905. It gives the visitor a glimpse of a lifestyle that is now all but a faded memory. In 1929, W. Redmond Cross purchased the property. His wife, Julia Newbold Cross, was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society and served as president of the New York Horticultural Society. She made many improvement to the gardens with the help of some friends and a landscape architect. The house was remodeled in 1940 after the death of Mr. Cross. |
