A Memorial to the Hero's of Flight 93
On the morning of September 11, 2001, 33 passengers and 7 crew members boarded United Airlines Flight 93. The flight was to have taken them from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco, California. Minutes after take-off, the first of four hijacked aircraft struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Shortly after this, two more hijacked aircraft struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Shortly after these attacks, Flight 93 was taken over by hijackers who turned the aircraft towards Washington, DC. The brave passengers and crew devised a plan and put it into action, in an attempt to regain control of the aircraft. At 10:03 AM the hijackers crashed the airliner into a plowed field in an attempt to keep the passengers and crew from regaining control of the aircraft.
It has taken 10 years to complete phase 1 of a permanent memorial, which was dedicated on September 10, 2011. Phase 2 is now in progress. The images above were taken during construction of Phase 1 from the location where witnesses and visitors stood on the hill overlooking the crash site.
