Jacob Ford Mansion - Washington's Headquarters - Jockey Hollow

This home, owned and occupied by the widow and children of Jacob Ford, Jr. became the Headquarters for General Washington during the winter of 1779 to 1780. Martha joined her husband here after a difficult journey from Philadelphia. With General Washington came staff officers assigned to assist in the multitude of duties that came with running the Continental Army. Morristown was winter quarters for more than 10,000 soldiers and their support staff which included some wives.

This mansion is open for tours, but bring a tape recorder. This is the only way you can get inside to look around. I found the tour guide so interesting to listen to that I forgot to take notes. You have to stay with the group, so use your time wisely. There is much to see and learn here.
