Fort Hancock, located on Sandy Hook, New Jersey, is mostly in ruins, but is a must see!Originally an occupied outpost for the British during the revolutionary war, this fort was first built by the American Army during the war of 1812. It consisted of the oldest operating lighthouse in the United States (103 feet tall), Mortar Batteries, Granger Batteries, Disappearing Guns, Nike Missiles, and a weapons testing platform and range, including observation towers. The current concrete gun batteries were completed by 1890, however, they were constantly being upgraded through World War II. After the war, Nike missile batteries were placed where the 9-Gun disappearing guns had been. These were removed when the technological advances in ICBM's improved during the 1960's. All that remains today is some crumbling ruins, some of the original officers housing, the fire station (which has been restored), and the lighthouse (which has also been restored). Walking the grounds is a must see for anyone wanting to experience the vastness of this base and sheer scope of the size of the batteries, not to mention the calm beaches and fantastic views of New York! The Sandy Hook Foundation has been actively working to restore this great base, and has plans to restore the original officers club and turn it into a restaurant, restore officers row and make many of the buildings offices, and bring on some commercial businesses that will enhance the experience and nostalgia of the base. |
