Fort Lee, New Jersey, is directly across the Hudson from New YorkIn some ways, Fort Lee is really hard to find. For those visitors coming from out of town, you should consult a mapping program such as Microsoft's Streets and Trips 2003 to familiarize yourself with the area before you venture into this area. One wrong turn, and you will find yourself driving onto the George Washington Bridge and into New York where the driving gets confusing for those of us who were not born there. But, the trip is REALLY worth the effort. Besides the historical significance of this fort, the views of New York and the George Washington Bridge (the GWB to the locals) are breathtaking. Situated on a cliff overlooking the Hudson River, this fort was built to allow Washington to see fleet movements developing in either Upper or Lower New York Bay, and it was close enough to the river to shell passing ships. With a twin fort across the river, Washington hoped to make the Hudson Impenetrable. Unfortunately for Washington, Fort Lee was overrun by the British on November 20, 1776. This began Washington's retreat across New Jersey. The pictures below give you some views of the fort, and some examples of the great vistas that you will enjoy when you visit the fort. It really is a "must see" for any visitor to New Jersey. |
