Gettysburg Battlefield

Fought between July 1st and 3rd, 1863, the battle of Gettysburg was a pivotol battle in the Civil War. It was also the war's bloodiest battle, leading to over 51,000 casualties. The battle resulted in the defeat of General Robert E. Lee, and ultimately, in the successful end of the Confederate State's hopes of independence. The Union Troops, lead by Major General George Gordon Meade, fought a desparate battle to defeat the Confederate forces, leading to a closure of the bloodiest period in American history.

After the battle, the graves of those lost while defending the Union were found to be scattered all over the Gettysburg area. A group of prominent citizens of Gettysburg lobbied the Federal Government to establish a Soldiers National Cemetary on the site of the battle. There efforts were successful, and the process of moving the bodies of the soldiers who fought in the battle began. The movement continued until well after the dedication of the cemetary. It was at this dedication on November 9, 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address.

This page is dedicated to providing some images of the battlefield, especially those taken from a vantage point overlooking large portions of the battlefield.
