Knox's Quarters at Valley Forge
In contrast to soldiers' log huts, officers' quarters appears lavish. But the house in these pictures looks significantly different than in the encampment days. Architectural modifications have more than doubled the size of this house.
Though a number of officers started the encampment in local farm houses, they later moved to huts to be closer to their men. The first picture in this set shows a light gray section at the left end. This is the original building. The second section was built somewhere after 1825 with modifications being made until 1925. The right end with the smaller roof was built in 1975.
Brig. General Henry Knox was Washington's 27 year old artillery chief. He took over the John Brown farm.
