Wheatland - Home of James Buchanan
Wheatland was the home of James Buchanan, the only President of the United States to come from Pennsylvania. His home is located on a beautiful 4 acre estate. I visited the house on a clear December day and enjoyed walking around the grounds taking in all the sights.
As I was taking pirctures of the front of the home, I met Felice Ethun, Director of Education and Public Programs for Lancaster County's Historical Society and President James Buchanan's Wheatland. She was kind enough to allow me to take pictures inside of the home in-between tours, and introduced me to Patrick Clarke, the Director of President James Buchanan's Wheatland. He has done a wonderful job of preparing the home for the holiday tours. I have included some of the pictures I took during my brief stay in the gallery above.
The home has been beautifully restored and preserved with period pieces, but what really had my attention was how beautifully they had decorated it for the Christmas season. The theme for this year is the Nutcracker Battles the Mighty Mouse King (see the bottom center picture in the gallery). Every room has been appointed with decorations that meet the period of President Buchanan's home while keeping the theme in mind!
I highly recommend that everyone who has the opportunity to visit Lancaster, Pennsylvania, takes the time to visit Wheatland and enjoy the tour. The guides are dressed in period costumes and are very knowledgeable, and it is a child-friendly tour.
