Williamson Wheelwright Shop - East Jersey Olde TowneA wheelwright is a person who makes and repairs carriage wheels. Wheelwrights need to employ a number of skills including metal working or blacksmithing. The Williamson Wheelwright shop was originally located along the busy Brunswick-Princeton Turnpike, now Route 27, in Franklin Township. The building received its name from the Williamson family who owned the shop for much of the late 18th and 19th centuries. In 1750, William Williamson's name is also listed as an elder in the Dutch Church of New Brunswick. This shop went through many ownerships during its tenure along Route 27. It was donated by John and Jane Halase, and moved to its current location in 1977. |
